Earlier this month, in a tragic accident out of Sate Fe County, two people lost their lives in a head on collision. According to a report by the Santa Fe New Mexican, the collision occurred around 11 a.m. on Old Las Vegas Highway, near the intersection with Old Pecos Trail.
Apparently, the driver of a GMC Yukon was heading west on Old Las Vegas Highway when the driver of the Yukon lost control of the vehicle when she over-corrected. The Yukon ended up leaving the lane in which it was traveling, crossing the center median, and entering the eastbound lane of traffic. As the Yukon entered the eastbound lane, it collided head on with a Ford Taurus.
The driver of the Ford Taurus was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Yukon was taken to the hospital where he later died as well. Police are not sure what caused the accident and are awaiting the results from the autopsies. However, police do not believe that drugs or alcohol were involved. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts.
Head On Collisions Are Some of the Most Dangerous Accidents
Among all the kinds of accidents, head on collisions are one of, if not the single most dangerous type of accident. The reason why head on collisions are more dangers has to do with the physics behind them. In other kinds of New Mexico car accidents, two cars may collide in a way that distributes the force evenly throughout the side of the car or allows the cars to “bounce” off of each other. However, in a head on collision, there is nowhere for the car to go. It is as though the car ran straight into a brick wall.
Common Causes of New Mexico Head On Collisions
There are myriad causes for head on collisions on the roadway. Here are a few of the more common ways that a head on collision may occur:
- Falling asleep at the wheel
- Traveling the wrong way down a one-way road.
- Impaired driving.
- Distracted Driving.
- Speeding around a blind corner.
- Improper passing on a two-lane road.
- Inadvertently crossing over the center line.
Because they are so dangerous, every precaution should be taken to prevent a head on collision.
